What happens on my first driving lesson?

So you've booked your first lesson, now you don't know what to expect! We've put together this handy guide so you know what to expect and what to bring!

What happens on my first driving lesson?

So you’ve decided you want to learn to drive and hopefully you have chosen us to help you teach you, but what happens on your first driving lesson?

Learning a new skill can be daunting enough, we’ve put together this page so you know exactly what to expect on your first lesson.

Booking your first lesson.

When you get in touch one of our team will take some basic details from you and pass your details on to one of our driving instructors. Your driving instructor will get in touch with you within 48 hours and introduce themselves and book you in for a day and time thats suits you.

Your first driving lesson.

On your first driving lesson it’s important to make sure you bring a few things with you:

  • Your provisional license
  • Any glasses/contact lenses you require
  • Sensible footwear (no high heels of flip flops please)
  • Any previous progress reports or fail sheets from pervious tests (if applicable)
  • At the agreed time your instructor will get in touch to let you know they are outside waiting, please be ready on time as your lesson starts at the agreed time. The instructor will introduce themselves and straight away check your provisional license and have a quick chat about your prior driving experience. Depending on the location your instructor may drive you a quieter area before you get behind the wheel.

Throughout your lessons our instructors will make conversation and talk to you, we find it helps relax people and when you do have questions it’s a lot easier to ask us :)

When you reach a suitable location (if you aren’t already at one) your instructor will perform an eyesight test to ensure your vision is within the DVSA requirements – this is a simple test of reading a clean number plate from a minimum distance of 20.5 metres (around 67 feet or 5 car lengths depending how you want to work it out :) ).

What Happens next

This is where you start to shine, you will start to learn everything you need to know on your test from clutch control (only in manual lessons) to junctions, roundabouts and maneuvers – you wont learn it all in one lesson but we’ll teach you to a pace that suits you to the highest, safest standards.

At the end of your first driving lessons your instructor will ask you how you feel it went, you will get a summary of the lessons (what was good, what needs more work) and you will be given a progress report and book your next driving lesson.

It’s that simple, if you want to know who your instructor might be, have a look over at our driving instructor profiles and see who works in your area, if you’re ready to book your first lesson than fill in the callback form on this page!
