Part 1 Driving Instructor Training - TDA Instructor training

What is the ADI Part 1 test?

The ADI part 1 test is the first obstacle in the way of you becoming a fully approved driving instructor. Before you do this you will need to complete your Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and apply to become a trainee driving instructor with the DVSA. There is nothing to stop you preparing for your part 1 whilst you wait for your DBS or your application to come back.

There are 2 parts to the part 1 test:

Multiple-choice questions Hazard perception – a video test about spotting hazards on the road Both tests are taken at the same time and you must pass both test together. To pass the multiple choice test you must:

get an overall score of at least 85 out of 100 and at least 20 out of 25 in each of the 4 categories of questions You will fail if you get an overall score of 85 or higher, but don’t score high enough in each of the 4 categories.

To pass the hazard perception test, you need to score at least 57 points out of 75.

How do I prepare for my ADI part 1 test?

The part 1 exam is the first of the three tests you sit. Just because it’s the first doesn’t mean you can wing it. The test is designed to show you have good knowledge across multiple sections of driving theory and hazard perception. The test is essentially a more difficult version of the theory test you sat when you learn to drive.

We use online theory test pro software for all learners and PDI’s, we are able to monitor your progress and offer help and advice when needed. Our trainee’s all get this free of charge and you are also welcome to attend any of our instructor training workshops.

What happens on the day?

Arrive at the test centre at least 15 minutes before the start time, arriving early will allow you to remain calm and collected. Take with you the appointment confirmation (email or print out) and your driving licence. If you have the old style paper driving licence, you will also need some sort of photographic identification, such as your passport.

The test is computer based with one question at a time being shown on the screen

At the end of your test you will be given your results. If you pass you’ll get a pass certificate. You’ll need this when you book and take your driving instructor part 2 test.

If you fail you will get a letter at the test centre. It’ll tell you which parts you didn’t score enough points on so you know what to practice. We will advice you to do a little more practice but do not be disheartened if you do fail, some of the best instructors we see don’t pass first time.

Ready to take your part 1?

Great – you can book your part 1 exam directly with the DVSA website.

Once you have passed your part 1, you can proceed to the part 2 test.
